The two-hour Talkeetna River Natural History Float Trip explores the lower Talkeetna, a glacier-fed waterway steeped in pioneer history. The launch point is just 10 minutes from Talkeetna, perfect for visitors staying in town. Your guides are versed in describing the flora, fauna, and scenery along the way. You’ll stop to visit two active bald eagles' nests, see beaver dams, and look for bear tracks —all before joining the mighty Susitna River for the loop back to Talkeetna. On clear days, the Susitna offers a stunning view of McKinley and the entire Alaska Range, and there’ll be plenty of opportunities to take photos.

Enjoy being whisked into the heart of the wilderness in comfort and style. As you travel twenty miles of river your Naturalist will talk about the rivers in the area, as well as information about Mt McKinley. The safari offers opportunities to view nesting bald eagles, beaver activity, moose and bear in their natural habitat. Be sure to bring your camera so you can capture this unforgettable adventure.

Upon arriving at our Adventure site you will take a 1/4 mile leisurely nature walk where you will see a Dena'ina Indian Encampment, who were the earliest native settlers in the area. You will visit an authentic trapper's cabin with its original furnishings and view how trappers lived in "Bush" Alaska at the turn of the century.Your experienced guide will display furs from the local area and demonstrate trapping methods. Naturalists will also acquaint you with the wildflowers and plants that grow in abundance along the river system and you will learn about the edible plants that were used by the Native Indians for cooking and medicines.

Stand in the splendor of Denali and the great Alaska Range from a spectacular vantage point on the Susitna River! The folklore, artifacts and a panoramic view of Denali in the Alaska Range combine to make this an unforgettable and unique Alaskan river adventure. Bring along your camera and comfortable walking shoes for an Alaskan adventure.

What To Wear

Due to unpredictable Alaskan weather, we advise dressing in layers, which will allow you to stay warm and dry as the outdoor environment changes. For this event, please also bring comfortable walking shoes and a jacket that can shield you from light wind or rain.
